Female DJs

India has witnessed an explosion in the electronic music scene, with festivals such as Sunburn gaining more popularity and rivaling European festivals such as Sonar. Synonymous with this rise in this music scene is the ascension of female DJs, still a relatively new profession in India for women. A handful of known and respected female DJs in Mumbai dominate the scene in this industry. A profession which has emerged for women only a few years ago, the female DJs are now rivalling their established male counterparts.

This project explores four of the main female DJs and producers in Mumbai; DJ Kini, DJ Vandana, DJ Ayesha and DJ Priyanjana.
My portrait of DJ Ayesha was chosen as the cover of the FT Weekend Magazine for their India special issue in November 2012.
