The World Health Organization estimates that 45 million people worldwide are blind; 90 percent of them are in developing nations. In Nepal there is a high prevalence of cataract but many of these cases could be prevented or treated by cataract surgery.
The Sagarmatha Choudhary Eye Hospital in Lahan was opened in 1983 to improve the eye health in Eastern Nepal, with support from CBM. The hospital now performs between 200-300 operations a day. Many of it’s patients who arrive are impoverished, travelling from as far as India and leave with their sight restored.
